Day 2: México City. City Tour & Torre Latinoamericana

After an included breakfast, you board a Mexico City guided tour visiting major attractions. We start where it all began, at the Zocalo. You will see the National Palace with an extended series of mural paintings that show a graphic evolution of the history of the country which were painted by Diego Rivera. The Metropolitan Cathedral, the oldest and largest cathedral in Latin America, is a spectacular building intended to distract the Aztec people from their own previous believes and convert them to the new religion. Right behind the Cathedral you can find the “Tenochtitlan Templo Mayor Pyramids” which were part of the big ceremonial center of the Aztecs. Templo Mayor was not only the most visible sight of an immense aborigine urban complex, but also represented the cosmic center of the universe for the Aztecs. You will drive by the Palacio de Bellas Artes, a 19th Century all white marble building functioning as a theater as well as an art museum, with many fine sculptures. We will continue to visit The Torre Latinoamericana, which was Latin America’s tallest building when constructed in 1956, and thanks to the deep-seated pylons that anchor the building, it has withstood several major earthquakes including those of 1985 and 2017. Views from the 44th-floor observation deck and the 41st-floor lounge bar are spectacular, smog permitting. Admission includes access to an on-site museum that chronicles Mexico City's history. To get a feeling of the city you will drive along the Paseo de la Reforma Avenue which was inspired by the “Champs Elisée” of Paris.

This church is a place of pilgrimage for millions of Mexicans and followers from all over the world.  The day will then dedicate a visit to the ancient archaeological zone of Teotihuacan, north of Mexico City. This was the Toltec-Aztec ceremonial center of Teotihuacan, an archeological site with buildings bigger and as impressive or more, as the Egyptian pyramids. These monumental buildings where constructed by Toltec architects, a very advanced culture dominated by the Aztecs before the colonization of Mexico. You will see its impressive Toltec pyramids dedicated to the sun and the moon, the Quetzalcoatl Temple and the fortresses, the largest monuments of their type in the world.

It was founded the 21st September in 1551 with the name “Real y Pontificia Universidad de México”. It is the biggest and most important University in Mexico and Iberoamerica. Xochimilco is like stumbling across an asis in the desert. This eclectic place is set in the middle of a colossal city where you can discover colors your eyes have never seen before. Declared a World Heritage Site since 1987, rediscover its colors as you walk down the aisles of its markets full of iris flowers. Float along the walled canals lined with gardens and curtains of trees on brightly painted and decorated trajineras (a traditional flat-bottomed boat) and evoke a time when this watery surrounding dominated the landscape of the Anahuac. Discover the small artificial islands, called chinampas, which are used to grow flowers, vegetables and ornamental plants. Take this magnificent tour as you eat and drink your fill of the different Mexican delicacies accompanied by the music of the Mariachi or Marimba. In the midst of this splendor you will also a startling place that will make your skin crawl: the island of dolls.
