Welcome at Tuxtla Gutierrez airport and continue to Chiapa de Corzo. Just 12 km from the capital city. This peaceful colonial town of Chiapa de Corzo, is located on the banks of the Rio Grijalva. It’s best known claim to fame is that it was the first city ever founded by the Spanish in the State of Chiapas (1523). It was the Spaniard, Diego de Mazariegos, who founded the town. As the story goes, when his army invaded the local indigenous peoples’ settlement a few kilometers downstream from here, they all jumped to their deaths in the canyon rather than surrender to his forces. Mazariegos eventually left to found what is today San Cristobal de las Casas, preferring the climate and less hostile reception he encountered there. The town is a main starting point for trips into the impressive Sumidero Canyon boat trip. We will board the tour in Cahuare, a quite aborigine place located in Chiapa de Corzo Municipality, to initiate our descent in to the Sumidero Canyon, a natural geological wonder, carved as an incision through the Mountains by the forceful waters of the Grijalva River. The cliffs and granite walls of the canyon reach up to 800 meters above the river level. According to the legend, the Chiapa Indians resisting the Spanish would rather throw themselves down than become prisoners. After the visit to the Canyon, we will continue to San Cristobal de Las Casas. It was formerly the state’s capital and used to be called Ciudad Real. This town combines its colonial heritage and a strong Indian culture. Continue to San Cristóbal de las Casas.
